What a POS receipt invoice should include
A receipt and an invoice are not the same document, and using the wrong one costs small shops money. A receipt is proof that a sale already happened. An invoice is a request for payment that hasn't happened yet. If a customer takes goods on account and you hand them a receipt, you've just recorded a debt as though it were paid.
Most shops need both: receipts for walk-in cash and transfer sales, invoices for customers buying in bulk or on credit. Here's what belongs on them.
The checklist
- Your shop name, address and phone number
- A unique receipt or invoice number
- The date and time of the sale
- Every item sold, with its own line
- SKU or product code, where you use them
- Quantity and unit price for each item
- Any discount, shown as its own line
- The total, and tax if you charge it
- The payment method — cash, transfer, card or POS terminal
- Whether the amount is paid or still owing

Not every job needs every line. Use the ones that match how you charge.
Itemised goods
One line per product. A single line reading "provisions" helps nobody — not the customer checking the total, and not you reconciling stock at close of day.
SKU or product code
Your internal code beside each item. It's what turns a stack of receipts into stock records you can actually count against.
Quantity and unit price
How many, and the price of one. Show both rather than just a line total, so a customer can verify the arithmetic without asking you.
Discounts
Bulk discounts, loyalty reductions, or a negotiated price. Show the discount as its own line rather than quietly lowering the unit price, so your real margin stays visible in your records.
Payment method
Cash, bank transfer, card or POS terminal. Recording it is what lets you reconcile your drawer against your bank at the end of the day.
Amount paid and balance
For customers buying on account, what they've paid and what's still owed. This is the line that turns a receipt book into a debtors list.
Returns and exchanges
Your policy and its window, printed on the receipt. It settles arguments at the counter before they start.
Inventory note
Not a charge, but tie each sale back to stock. Shops that itemise every receipt know what's selling; shops that don't are guessing.

What is the difference between a receipt and an invoice?
An invoice requests payment for goods or services not yet paid for. A receipt confirms payment that has already been made. If a customer takes goods on credit, give them an invoice; once they pay, give them a receipt. Using a receipt for unpaid goods records a debt as settled.
What should a POS receipt include?
