What a tailoring invoice should include
Tailoring runs on trust and memory, and both fail at exactly the wrong moment. The client remembers agreeing one price, you remember another. They say the fabric was included. Nobody wrote anything down, and the outfit is already cut.
An invoice is how you stop that. Written at the point of order, it fixes the style, the fabric, the deposit and the balance while everyone still agrees. Here's what belongs on it.
The checklist

- A unique invoice number and the date
- The style or design ordered, described clearly
- Fabric — type, quantity, and who is supplying it

Not every job needs every line. Use the ones that match how you charge.
Deposit
Taken before you cut. In most workshops this is half the total and it covers your fabric and your time if the client disappears.
Balance on delivery
What's left after the deposit, due before the outfit leaves your workshop. Put the amount and the due date on the invoice at the point of order, not on collection day.
Sewing or workmanship charge
Your labour for the piece, separate from materials. If you price per outfit, name the outfit; if you price per piece, list each one.
Fabric and materials
Type, colour and yardage, at the price per yard. If the client brought their own fabric, still write a line saying so — it prevents the argument later.
Lining, trims and accessories
Lining, buttons, zips, beads, stones, hooks. Small items that quietly eat your margin when you forget to bill them.
Embroidery or embellishment
Hand or machine work priced on its own, because it's the line clients most often want adjusted to fit a budget.
Alterations and adjustments
Taking in, letting out, hemming, restyling. Say which alterations are free within a fitting window and which are chargeable.
Style and measurement notes
Not a charge, but put the measurements and style details on the invoice. It's your record and your defence when a client says it doesn't fit.
Rush or express fee
For an outfit needed sooner than your normal turnaround, usually before an owambe. Price the disruption properly.

What should a tailor's invoice include?

How much deposit should a tailor take?
Most workshops take half the total before cutting, and some take the full cost of fabric plus part of the workmanship. Whatever you choose, take it before you cut and write it on the invoice with the date it was paid.
How do I invoice when the client brings their own fabric?
Bill for workmanship, lining and trims only, and add a line to the invoice stating that the fabric was client-supplied, with the yardage received. That single line prevents most disputes about a shortfall.
Should alterations be free?
